English Curriculum

Key Stage 3

During years 7 and 8, pupils are introduced to all of the skill areas they will require to succeed at Key Stage 4. They study a variety of novels, plays, poetry and non-fiction texts and they are required to write for a variety of purposes and audiences. Pupils also have the opportunity to read fiction of their own choice through the Accelerated Reader scheme which is designed to closely track and improve their reading ages and develop positive reading habits for their futures.

Key Stage 4

All pupils follow AQA English Language and English Literature: http://www.aqa.org.uk/subjects/english/gcse. Year 9 is a foundation year for the GCSE, giving pupils their first experience of some of texts that they will be examined on in year 11 and providing further challenge in the key skill areas covered in years 7 and 8. In year 10, pupils study all of the GCSE Literature texts (Shakespeare – Macbeth; Nineteenth Century fiction – Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein or Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol; modern prose – J.B. Priestley’s An Inspector Calls and poetry – Power and Conflict collection) in depth and are introduced to the English Language fiction and non-fiction papers that they will sit in year 11. In year 11, pupils revise all of these elements of the two GCSE courses with a focus on examination skills and approaches to the questions they will be required to answer for the qualifications.
