Surrey is an easy choice to call ‘home’ for international teachers. One of the most picturesque and London-accessible home counties, Surrey is located to the South East of London & has excellent transport links to the city.

Around 1 million people live in Surrey. You can easily see why. Surrey is a very safe county to live and work in. Surrey will offer you a slice of greenery and only a short commute into the heart of London. The Holiday, Four Weddings and a Funeral, and Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason were all filmed in stunning Surrey. It’s truly ‘picture perfect’.  You really do get a good mix of quaint English countryside and all the excitement of one of the world’s most vibrant cities, both right your doorstep.

Surrey has been named “England’s leafiest county”. When you are there, be sure to visit the Surrey Hills Area of Outstanding Beauty. The county is effectively divided into two by the North Downs, which are a ridge of chalk hills that run all the way down to The White Cliffs of Dover. The North Downs Way provides excellent walking tracks and plenty of picnic spots when the English sun shines.

Skipping across the stepping stones over the River Mole at Box Hill is a surefire way to bring out your inner child, you could even have an ice cream afterwards! Or check out iconic Bourne Wood, setting for so many film forest scenes, including The Golden Compass, Skyfall, Gladiator, Children of Men, several Harry Potter films, and whole lot more.

Aficionados of fine food and drink will love Surrey for it’s eclectic restaurants, and growing craft alcohol industry. Surrey is home to a number of microbreweries, wineries and distilleries, tours of which make for a fun afternoon out!

Living and teaching in Guildford

Often considered the ‘heart’ of Surrey, Guildford is a vibrant university town. It’s big enough that  Jaime Oliver has a restaurant here, and Guildford High Street is very pleasant even for a window shopper. Accomodation is plentiful due to the student and post graduate population. History buffs will enjoy Guildford Spike, a fascinating and well-preserved 19th century Workhouse, as well as Surrey’s only Royal Castle, and a spectacular ‘modern’ Cathedral. Quaint, chocolate-box rural Britain is just a 5 minute drive from the city! Career-wise, 79% of Guildford schools have a “Good” or above Oftsed rating, and there’s a wide range of school types here, so you’ll have no problem finding a school that suits your style.

Base yourself in the north west corner of Surrey and enjoy easy access major transport roads and hubs, including Heathrow Airport and London Waterloo station (just 25 minutes away). Be sure to check out the canal waterways, cycle paths and hiking trails, including the fascinating Horsell Common (there’s even a HG Wells walk for War of the Worlds fans) and picturesque Pyrford Lock – a pleasant way to spend a day before ending up at a cosy, quintessentially English pub! Culture lovers can visit the Lightbox Theatre and watch West End shows at a fraction of the price.

Living and teaching in Reigate / Redhill

Named as the best place the South-East to live in 2013, living in historic Reigate isn’t the centre of the party-universe, exactly, but you would be hard pressed to find such a high number of different schools to choose from anywhere else. With quick and easy access to major motorways, airports and London, exploring the UK, Europe and beyond is going to be easy. Living in this area means you can get to London in just 20 mins, and you have unrivalled access to Gatwick Airport. You will also be ideally placed to reach the south east coast of Brighton, only a 45 min train journey down to the coast. Spend your weekend exploring Reigate Caves, spectacular walks and the National Trust Centre at Reigate Hill or Priory Park. There’s also a pretty cool ghost walk for those who with an appreciation of the macabre!
